Hand Stamped Clay Bowls

Hey folks!

I hope that everyone had a great holiday!

I'm here to share something a little different from what I normally do. I need some easy, but personal gifts and I thought hand stamping some clay bowls would be just the ticket! These do require a little bit of planning, but they are incredibly easy to make.

If you're interested in any of the products I've used, I have links (some affiliate links) throughout and at the end of the post. Click HERE to read my full disclosure policy.

I used DAS Air Dry Clay to make all of my bowls. There are several brands on the market and I have those in the thumbnail links below, but this one is my fave. It dries with very little shrinking and doesn't crack, provided it doesn't get too cold or too hot, too fast while drying.

You can watch the video on how I made my cards HERE. You can also click on the thumbnail link below.

I talk more in the VIDEO about the amount you need to start with, but start small folks. You don't need much if your bowls is small. The clay has a lil bit of working time, but it's better to start with a small amount.

When I rolled the clay out with my ROLLING PIN, I made it as about as thinks as two quarters stacked together. This was a good thickness to work with and finish.

I found while I was making these rubber stamps worked the best. I started with the Simon Says Stamp REBECCA LACE Background Stamp and Brilliance PEARLESCENT POPPY Ink. You could also use wood mounted stamps, but I think you would run into the same problem as you do with card making. The wood block gets in the way.

I used several types of pigment inks. Momento Luxe worked well with the rubber type stamps such as the Simon Says Stamp LEAVES Background Stamp. For the bowl above, I used Momento Luxe GREY FLANNEL.

Delicata Inks were some of my favorites to use. I loved the shimmer and I found they were a little but drier than even the Momento Luxe Inks. Below I used the My Favorite Things FLORAL FANTASY Background Stamp and Delicata CELESTIAL COPPER Ink.

You want your ink to be wet enough it sticks to the stamps and transfer the image to the clay, but you have to keep in mind the clay has moisture in it too.

The best inks I found to use were the Avery Elle Pigments Inks. They were perfect.

Be sure one you place your clay in the bowl that you smooth out the sides as much as possible before it dries. Be careful though. The ink is still wet and it can smear.

I show in the VIDEO what I'm talking about.

You can also use clear stamps to make these. In the picture above, I use the Avery Elle BANNER & WREATH Stamp Set and Momento Luxe TEAL ZEAL Ink.

This is where the moisture in the ink and clay can really make things tricky with the slickness of the clear stamp.

One of the things, I like about this clay is, you have some play time before it starts to dry too much. So I thought I'd use that to my advantage and use the Hero Arts COLOR LAYERING OCTOPUS Stamp Set. I used Avery Elle SEA GLASS, SAPPHIRE and FOG pigments Inks. You can see tons of detail with these inks on the clay.

On the bowl pictured below, I used a couple of Hero Arts dye inks. I noticed that the bolder, darker inks worked better on the clay. I talk more about this in the VIDEO.

I sprayed a couple of these with Tsukeniko SHIMMER SPRITZ, but at the end of the day, you couldn't really tell after I sealed them. You could also try brushing one some Ranger PERFECT PEARL and lightly mist it with way before you seal it. I'd love to see how that turns out!

Once the bowls were dry, I sanded them with 3M Sandpapers in 220 GRIT and 400 GRIT. You shouldn't need to put too much work in to this, but it makes a huge difference in the finished project. Make sure to wipe them down really well with some TACK CLOTH. You'll be so glad you did after they are sealed and dried.

To seal the bowls, I used MOD PODGE DISHWASHER SAFE Sealer. You can also use a spray sealant, but I found the clay absorbed it too fast. I didn't care to much for the finish personally.

That's it!
